The African Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation (AfriC) conducts research on practices, approaches and theories of Higher Education Internationalisation.
AfriC develops new and more equitable practices and approaches appropriate for the developing and emerging world.
The African Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation (AfriC), located in South Africa, conducts research on practices, approaches and theories of Higher Education Internationalisation and develop new and more equitable practices and approaches appropriate for the developing and emerging world.
In addition, the Centre engages with universities, other higher education institutions, research institutions, academics, researchers and experts from South Africa, Africa and other countries on research projects and research collaboration aimed at the transformation of higher education internationalisation.
As a group of experienced higher education practitioners, it is also engaged in capacity building and strategic planning linked to higher education internationalisation.
AfriC has established itself as the independent research platform for African Higher Education Internationalisation.

Internationalisation of higher education can no longer be seen to be practised only within and by higher education institutions. It needs to leave ‘the university’ and live in the broader society. The notion of entanglement accentuates reciprocal, uneven connections...

Into the Light
The internationalization journey of the Nelson Mandela University became a reality in July 2000 with the appointment of its first Director. As a very new activity for South African Universities, after the first Democratic elections of 1994, it started as a journey through the unknown and now 18 years later reached a level of maturity where the specific model of internationalization of Nelson Mandela University became one of the leading models of internationalization in South Africa. It is important that this story be told in a comprehensive manner, to serve as an example to others on how the university’s internationalisation was conceptualized as well as the unique elements adopted by the University to allow for its successful implementation and growth into one of the premier internationalization examples.
